SEO tips that might help

If you’re using the latest Wordpress 2.7, then 50% of the SEO has been done for you. The remaining is to :

  1. use the All in One SEO Pack plugin that once activated takes care of your title and which part of your site will be crawled.
  2. use The Escape’s Web Page Analyzer that will show which links are broken and whether you’re using the right meta keywords. Repair broken links and if the results for the meta keyword don’t suit your expectation : edit your header.php of your current wordpress theme and add the meta keywords separated by comma in this line of code :
    <meta name="keywords" content="keyword1,keyword2,keyword3" />
  3. use tags and keywords wisely. When you’ve decided which keyword you want to rank for, make the appropriate changes and run your site through the search engine analysis tool for that keyword. The analysis may take some minutes. Make sure to read the tips provided in the report at the end of the analysis.

WicketPixie, one of my favourite free Premium Wordpress Theme

See WicketPixie in action on the blog of Chris Pirillo. Why it’s my favourite? Designed by the famous Matt Brett, WicketPixie provides a great web 2.0 design with some fabulous options behind the scene with which you can change the complete theme within seconds. From the font, font’s colour, background image, the headings’ style : approximately 99% of the design.

Download a trimmed version of the WicketPixie Premium Wordpress theme

I’ve trimmed it and removed many things I consider a bit too complicated to implement for beginners. To use the theme, just download and activate it within Appearance. Also, load a couple of widgets to see some actions in the sidebar but don’t activate the Search widget as you already have the search bar at the top.

To use the theme : Login into your Wordpress dashboard > Appearance > Themes > WicketPixie Social Media Theme > Activate “WicketPixie Social Media Theme”

To customise the theme : within your Wordpress dashboard > Appearance > WicketPixie Options > bring the changes you want > Save changes. You can revert to the default style by selecting Reset Syle Options within that same page.

My favourite features : wordpress 2.7 compatible, widget-optimised, compatible with latest major browsers, the upper-bar which follows the scrolling of the page providing a great way to present your visitors some of your favourite stuffs, related posts for single posts and gravatar ready.

My changes to the theme : removed lots of bloated stuffs, cleaned the WicketPixie Options page, archives template added, removed lots of functions which I consider many won’t use, no need to use or activate any plugins in order to use the theme(it works out of the box)

Thanks to Chris Pirillo for letting us download his marvelous theme and Matt Brett for putting it into shape.

WindowsPager, at last some real virtual desktops

You know Spaces on Mac OS X Leopard. How about something which can almost put all the powers of Spaces on your PC running Windows XP/Vista/etc? And that’s WindowsPager. It puts options when you right-click on the title bar of your applications which allow you to send them to separate virtual desktops. Also, you can keep an eye of all your virtual desktops from your taskbar. To find them quicker, you’ve got those application’s icons displayed on the thumbnails of the virtual desktops down on your taskbar.

You could find loads of this kind of software elsewhere but WindowsPager seem to be a good try, light on resources and it seem also to be safe with an automatic Window restore even on crash by use of two seperate processes. Do check its features or its demo: the drag `n drop between Desktops really pleased me. And what’s the best part? It’s totally free and requires no installation.

The Matrix within Wordpress

Try this the next time you’re on Wordpress writing an article. While writing your article, save it after making some minor changes, so that under Post Revisions(the last field on the Write Post page) you can see some date and time appearing like follows : (more…)

Try ScreenToaster, might be a better alternative to Jing

I’ve been under the sunshine of Jing ever since I’ve known about this jewel. It’s a free application allowing you to make screenshots or video capture of whatever is going on your computer screen, with sound of course if it’s a video capture. It’s easy to use and really practical. You’ve got something like a sun sitting on top of your screen and you just point to it whenever you need some capturing need.

When it comes to screenshot, Jing is ultimately the best. Why? Because it really makes things easier. You can resize your screenshots while making it and when you’re sure you want it, you can save it on your computer, send it to your Flickr’s account or Screencast’s account with a click. You’re offered a Screencast account for free to store your Jing captures online.

The thing is when it comes to video, it gets a bit tricky. The other day, I was trying to film a Mario footage on YouTube. The video capture process went on smoothly but when it came to host this video online, it got complicated. First, the video capture output was in swf format, bulky in size and I could read it only with Jing on my computer. Nonetheless, I didn’t give up, I took the bulky video and decided to put it online. But YouTube wouldn’t accept it for I don’t know what reasons so I put it on my Screencast’s account. Finally, I gave up when I saw that it wouldn’t embed in the blog article I was writing.

Today, while strolling on Delicious, I met ScreenToaster. A quick visit on its site and its demo video convinced me that it might be up to something useful. Not to completely replace Jing, but perhaps take up the work of video capture when it comes to it. It’s free so why not try it, you too.
